YouthCare has confirmed that it will continue to operate its homeless youth shelter at YouthCare’s James W Ray Orion Center in 2014.
“We have been fortunate in our efforts to raise funds to keep the shelter open; such is the case that we can now offer 20 shelter beds 7 nights a week for youth aged 18-24 with a photo ID beginning on February 1st, 2014. We still cannot take any referrals for shelter through December and January, however,” YouthCare said in a statement.
YouthCare had announced the closure of the shelter after it found out it would be losing a primary source of funding at the end of 2013. Since then, King County Council has adopted a 2014 budget that includes $120,000 for YouthCare’s Young Adult Shelter, in addition to several other critical investments in services across King County for homeless youth and young adults. Several private funders have stepped up as well.
