King County is encouraging residents to get rid of unused, expired and leftover prescription medications properly through a secure medicine return program. Not disposing of medications properly can increase the risk of drug abuse, overdose, and preventable poisonings, while unwanted medicines flushed down toilets and sinks or thrown in the trash can end up in the environment.
Residents can take their medications to one of many drop-off points around King County. A map of locations around the state is available here. Some sites accept controlled substances and some do not.
Additionally, King County is partnering with the MED-Project, which will accept mailed in medications. Residents can either pick up an envelope at one of several community locations, or an envelope can be mailed to them. More information about that is available here.
